The Ministry of Defence is strengthening its cyber defence capabilities with a new security monitoring and analytics platform designed to improve threat detection, incident response and operational resilience.

Centerprise International and Elastic have delivered a new Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) and analytics platform for the Ministry of Defence’s (MOD) Defence Cyber Operations (DCO).

The platform is designed to give cybersecurity teams greater visibility across MOD networks, helping them identify threats earlier, respond more quickly to incidents and reduce the risk of disruption to military operations.

The deployment combines Elastic’s SIEM technology with commercial delivery, training, support and governance services from Centerprise.

The MOD operates networks around the clock, supporting thousands of users worldwide and processing large volumes of operational, intelligence and administrative traffic.

According to the companies, traditional SIEM platforms have struggled to keep pace with increasingly sophisticated cyber threats, creating gaps in visibility and slowing incident response.

The new capability aims to address these challenges by bringing security data together to provide analysts with a more comprehensive view of activity across the MOD’s environment.

Improving threat detection and response

The platform is intended to help DCO teams identify and contain malicious activity at an earlier stage, while simplifying security workflows and enabling faster responses to emerging threats.

It is also designed to strengthen operational resilience by reducing the likelihood of cyber incidents affecting military missions.

Centerprise and Elastic will provide a tiered support model, with Elastic supplying advanced technical expertise and Centerprise managing service coordination, escalation and governance.

Structured training and ongoing support are intended to help MOD personnel make effective use of the technology as cyber threats evolve.

Mark Brady, director of defence and security at Centerprise International, said the programme was about ensuring the MOD could make full use of its investment.

“Defence Cyber Operations deserves a platform that can grow with the scale of the challenge. Together with Elastic, we are building that capability while ensuring the MOD has the support to use it effectively from day one.

“Our structured governance and enablement approach ensures the MOD achieves maximum value and long-term resilience from this platform,” he said.

Faith Bateman, regional VP of public sector at Elastic, said the investment reflected the increasingly complex threats facing defence organisations.

“The Ministry of Defence’s continued investment in cyber defence reflects its commitment to staying ahead of an increasingly complex hybrid threat environment, where adversaries operate across cyber, information and physical domains simultaneously,” she said.

“Through our work with Defence Cyber Operations and Enterprise, we are enabling analysts to maintain a common operational picture across the entire environment, centralising data to accelerate detection and mission response, and allowing analysts to focus on high-priority threats.”

The companies said the combination of centralised security analytics, streamlined operations and ongoing support would help the MOD maintain its cyber defence capabilities as the threat landscape changes.
