Chris Given, director of the California Department of Technology and state CIO, is in a somewhat unique position — he’s new to the job, and has a new governor coming in next year.So how is he handling the state’s biggest IT issues? At the National Association of State CIOs Annual Conference in San Diego, Industry Insider — California caught up with Given for a video interview to cover just that.Big picture, the state is focused on maintaining cybersecurity as AI continues to gain ground and the federal government withdraws support. Other important issues include the management of large IT projects — the focus of a series of Little Hoover Commission meetings this year — and the shifting of data center costs toward smaller agencies. On more technical topics, Given said some of the things he’s most excited about are Poppy and digital identity.”The [Employment Development Department] knows how many hours you worked last month — are we able to take that and make your Medicaid application easier and more streamlined?” he said. “I think that’s a very powerful thing that is going to make many government services more accessible going forward, but it all hinges on that key, core technology.”
