Alabama Board of Nursing says data was downloaded in cybersecurity breach, details unclear
MONTGOMERY, Ala. —
The Alabama Board of Nursing has confirmed a cybersecurity breach that resulted in data being downloaded, though the type of data accessed remains unclear.
The board said a comprehensive investigation first identified suspicious activity in August, which was confirmed as malicious on Sept. 1. As a result, some data was collected and downloaded, but it is not clear what data was involved or whether personal information was affected.
The cybersecurity threat prompted the board to temporarily switch to paper applications for nursing licenses while the issue is being resolved. Online processes are still being worked on to be fully restored.
The board is advising license applicants to remain vigilant about cyber safety. Recommendations include watching for phishing or impersonation attempts, using stronger and unique passwords, enabling multifactor authentication where possible and considering credit freezes to prevent others from opening new accounts in their names.
