Queensland news: Gold Coast teens on jetski could face charges after causing boat with kids to capsize on Nerang River
Two teenagers could face charges after they circled a tinnie boat driven by two children on a busy Gold coast river, causing it to capsize.
Video captured by members of the public showed two jetskis rapidly approaching a small boat on the Nerang River.
The boat eventually capsized after the jetskis rapidly appraoched it. Today
As they got close to the boat, they both begin driving around the boat in circles, causing a large amount of wake turbulence to hit the tinnie, which contained two children who were on a fishing trip.
This led to the boat capsizing, causing the two kids to fall into the water.
Fortunately, the children were uninjured, though their boat was damage.
The two groups were not known to each other, police say.
The actions of the teenagers who were underage and riding the jetskis have been slammed by police.
“They were circled, they were sprayed, and ultimately, it led to their boat capsizing and the young fellas going into the water,” Acting Senior Sergeant Shannon Gray told Today.
“What they’ve done is incredibly dangerous.”
Shannon Grey of Queensland Police said the actions were “dangerous”. Today
Gray said the two kids were “shaken up” by the ordeal, and that police were working on tracking down the teens who were on the jetskis.
“The investigation is ongoing, however we are aware of who the offenders are, and they will be taken up with very shortly and formally spoken to,” Gray said, adding that they could face charges depending on their prior history and the exact offences they have committed.
He said he was aware that the issue of people riding dangerously on jetski’s was not a new issue on the river.
In July, video was circulated of boats being terrorised by jetski hoons in Broadbeach and the Sovereign Islands.
“It definitely is seem to be increasing these sorts of incidents, we are aware of it, we’re putting a lot of resources into targeting these offenders,” he claimed.
